Making art gives me opportunities to connect deeply with rhythms, spaces and sounds of nature, and recreate for myself over and over again my sense of freedom when I am in natural open spaces. I studied Fine Art at University during the 1990s, in Bristol and Wales. Having explored a number of traditional and contemporary art forms, I found that I most enjoy traditional painting processes, especially the purity of combining expressive mark-making with many layers of colour. I am inspired by influences from both classical (the use of glazes and "sacred" blues) and modern art traditions (epic British landscape and colour-field abstract expressionism.) I work on both large and small compositions, using layering and transparency to convey ideas of external and inner spaces. The many shades of blue I use in my paintings builds emotional and spiritual associations. I normally work simultaneously on several parts of a series of paintings. I exhibit regularly in solo and group contexts and I work from Redlees Artists' Studios in Isleworth, West London. As well as painting, I also provide drawing and painting classes and one-to-one tuition, which details can be found on the Tuition page.
